How Florikote Works

Florikote™ is a high-performance, polymer coated, controlled-release fertilizer technology that precisely controls the speed of nutrient release over a set period of time. Florikote™ is activated by moisture and the speed of release is only affected by soil temperature.

Florikote™ polymer technology begins with an impervious, liquid polymer that is first sprayed on the surface of fertilizer granules. At a certain point in the coating process, a second polymer is added, which results in a catalytic reaction between the two polymers. The result of this chemical reaction is an expected series of microscopic release passages in the coating surface which release’s nutrients through reverse osmosis. By adjusting the number of coating layers, different release periods of up to 12 months at 77°F can be achieved.

 

As part of the manufacturing process for Florikote™, fertilizer granules are pre-screened so that the finished product is of a similar size, assuring consistency in blended formulations. Fertilizer granules are treated to remove moisture prior to applying the polymer coating. The fertilizer granules are then coated with multiple layers of polymers, depending on the required release characteristics. After application, nutrients are released at a dependable and consistent rate, through reverse osmosis, after moisture enters via the micro-pores. Florikote is designed to last the stated duration based on average soil temperatures.

Florikan has successfully coated a range of fertilizer granules that vary in sizes including many that other companies have not successfully coated. Florikote™ is able to encapsulate irregular shaped fertilizer granules and SGN 50 water soluble particles, which increases available options and lowers costs for building nutrition programs. The Development of Florikote
Florikote™ uses leading edge technology in manufacturing the finest controlled release fertilizers. It was developed with “assistance from the NASA funded Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program”. NASA developed a polymer coating process where nutrients would release through semi-permeable polymer membranes. After extensive research and testing in conjunction with Florikan, the result became FlorikoteTM Controlled Release Fertilizer technology.

Rigorous Quality Control

Our QC test protocols assure quality standards meet or exceed competitive controlled release fertilizer products. One of the tests that is conducted during the post-production quarantine period is a 7 day 100° Fahrenheit water bath. This test is conducted using de-ionized water and EC values measure the conductivity of the fertilizer sample at intervals of 1, 3 & 7 days.
