Golf & Sports Turf

Superintendents and athletic field directors can now reduce fertilizer applications while improving turf quality, reducing labor costs, and limiting nutrient run-off.  Florikote™ controlled release fertilizer blends are designed to ensure that turf is consistently delivered nutrients up to a 6 month period even during periods of heavy rainfall and/or high temperatures.

Conventional turf fertilizers are associated with a feast and famine nutrition cycle.  The nutrients are typically more rapidly available than the plant can absorb them and then leach out before the next application so that the turf is deprived of nutrients when it needs them.  Alternatively, many forms of conventional fertilizers are not immediately available for certain plants to absorb (i.e. urea Nitrogen and oxide forms of micronutrients).  When nutrition is consistently and readily available on a sports field, not only will you have increased visual appearance, the turf will also be able to recover from overuse much faster between fertilizer applications.   Nutritional programs that include Florikote™ have also been shown to aid in resistance to pests and disease and can reduce mowing frequency.

A recent university study demonstrated that 1 application of Florikote™ outperformed conventional fertilizers applied up to 6 times on St. Augustine turf maintenance over a 6 month period.  The Florikote™ treated turf had superior visual quality, nutrient uptake, and significant reductions in nutrient leaching.

Florikan believes that a fertilizer should be customized to meet the environmental conditions of a given region and climate.  Fertilizers perform differently in different parts of the country and during different times of the year.  A sensible approach is to apply products that provide and meet the nutritional needs of the turf with the fewest inputs to achieve the desired results with the most efficiency.

The broad and unique range of Florikote™ components in SGN sizes 90-200, provide professional turfgrass managers the greatest flexibility in designing a fertilization program to meet both local and cultural factors such as soil type, pH, and climate as well as a specific turf’s seasonal nutrient demands.

A secondary benefit to the improved health of the turf and reduced application costs/labor is the reduction of nutrient runoff and greenhouse gas emissions.  For its development of Florikote™ turf fertilizers, Florikan received a Gulf Guardian award from the EPA Gulf of Mexico Program Partnership.
